I leave in a few days, so it's time to pack my bike. My road bike has been transformed into a touring machine. My only home for the next few months. I've added a handlebar bag, a rack, a set of panniers, and something new for this trip, a frame bag. I need to pack for conditions ranging from 0C (32F) to 38C (100F). My whole bike, packed, without food or water weighs in at about 23kg (50lbs). No matter how many times I do this, I still get that uneasy feeling of butterflies in my stomach right before I leave. What sane person would give up a bed, A/C, running water, a toilet!? In exchange for sleepless nights hiding behind a cactus or tree. No shower for weeks at a time. And never knowing what you're gonna eat, or where you're gonna sleep next.
